Richard Corman’s photography documents the human spirit. Whether photographing artists, celebrities, politicians or champions of sport, he takes a penetrating look into the eyes of his subjects. Corman sees character through the camera and renders it for us in images of grace and integrity. As a portrait photographer, Corman has worked with a thrilling breadth of subjects, including athletes, actors, writers, designers, painters, and musicians. From advertising campaigns to movie posters, from the Hollywood hills to the Olympic arena, his range of work appeals to a wide audience.
Richard’s collection of celebrity portraits is a veritable who’s who of Hollywood, including Madonna, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Terrence Howard, Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Annette Benning, Ashley Judd, Tilda Swinton, and Barbra Streisand, to name a few. His roster of athletes is just as impressive with Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Lance Armstrong, Floyd Mayweather, and Cal Ripken, Jr. among his gallery of champions. Nobel Prize recipients, politicians such as Nelson Mandela and notables including former First Lady Laura Bush are among his extensive body of work. Advertising clients include Nike, Pepsi, Ralph Lauren, the New York City Ballet, Got Milk, ESPN, IBM, HBO, Disney, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, and A&E. Corman’s work has also been featured in numerous publications including Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Vogue, Self, Forbes, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and Town & Country.
Richard Corman’s first book, GLORY: Photographs of Athletes was published in 1999. The book is a collection of one hundred portraits ranging from world-class athletes to rising stars, from everyday athletes to Special Olympians. Richard’s second book, I AM PROUD, published in 2003, is a culmination of 15 years of work, reflects Richard’s respect and admiration for the athletes who participate in the Special Olympics games. Richard’s latest book, PREP: The Spirit of a High School Football Team, published September 2008, documents the year in the life of a group of teenagers through football. He is presently working on a new book project reflecting on his 25 years of Photography.
A native New Yorker, Richard graduated Hunter College with a degree in Art history and Psychology. He apprenticed with Richard Avedon in the early eighties, during which he assisted him on the American West project.
Richard lives in New York City with his wife, Patricia, and son, William. He maintains a studio on the upper west side of Manhattan close to where he grew up. Randy Cole currently represents his commercial work.
